We open on apiring writer Joey, our clumsy little hero. He has bad luck and massive student debt. He writes for Spimble, a clickbait site, where he baits and no one clicks. His love life is nonexistent—just ask Elaine, his mother who needs a liver transplant. After a terrible date with rich narcissist Gus, Joey writes about it and becomes a viral sensation. Jade, his terrifying boss, demands that he capitalize on his misery to generate that sweet, sweet clickbait. He begins seeking punishment, basking in the glow of every “like.” Gus decides to seek revenge by ruining Joey’s lucky streak of bad luck. Soon, Joey’s student debt gets paid off! And worst of all, his mother gets moved to the top of the transplant list! Joey is losing control. How can he get back on brand and restore his Eeyore-image? He sets out to unmask the generous life-ruiner. What happens when he identifies his secret benefactor? Will Joey continue to kill his good fortune for clicks? Or will his good fortune kill him? Think Ingrid Goes West meets The Devil Wears Prada.
